Lagos 2023: Sanwo-Olu Risks Ambode’s Fate

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos state worships Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu like a god. He has reasons to.

The Lagos strongman and APC National Leader made him governor of the Aquatic State as Lagos is widely known, despite the efforts of then Governor Akinwumi Ambode to stay in office for another four years.

Ambode, a beneficiary of Tinubu’s godfatherism had broken ranks with his benefactor who ensured that then governor never returned to the Alausa, Ikeja Government House. In his place, Tinubu commandeered his supporters to vote for Sanwo-Olu, a political neophyte, barely known in Lagos’s political space.

Since he became governor in 2019, Governor Sanwo-Olu has done everything to please his mentor, including making outlandish statements in favor of the former governor’s presidential ambition.

The governor has recently said Tinubu is the best candidate to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in his goodwill message to the former governor on his 69th birthday

In spite of Sanwo-olu’s absolute and unwavering loyalty to his mentor, feelers are that he may not return to the government house in 2023 as efforts are in top gear to replace him with another candidate, possibly a Muslim politician from the state. Both Ambode and Sanwo-olu are Christians and by the time the incumbent completes his term in 2023, the duo would have commulatively spent eight years as governors.
According to sources from Bourdillon, Tinubu’s political headquarter, some Muslim adherents in the state have started putting pressure on the former governor to support somebody from their faith to succeed Sanwo-olu in three years time, based on an unwritten agreement that the governorship will be rotated by people of both faiths. Even though, Tinubu is yet to speak on the issue because “2023 is still far and it’s too early to begin campaign when the incumbent is trying to reposition the state after the EndSARS destruction,” one of Tinubu’s close aides told the magazine on Monday, “the issue is currently being discussed and trust that Asiwaju will not disappoint on a critical matter such as this. Be assured,” he said. The top Tinubu’s aide spoke on the crest of a statement by the National President of the All Christian Leaders and Ministers Forum, Pastor Sam Ogedengbe that a Muslim should emerge as the next governor of the state. The clergy man believed to be very close to the former governor, spoke at the weekend at an event in the state.

Ogedengbe, who is also the General Overseer of Overcomers Pentecostal Prayer Church, Lagos said efforts are in top gear to ensure that the next governor would be a Muslim. Ogedengbe, the former Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Christian Religion, said he was among those who ensured that Governor Ambode, a Christian succeeded former Governor Babatunde Fashola in 2015, nothing that the gentleman arrangement will not be breached.

We Christian leaders and ministers hail administrations in the state since 1999, but we will insist that Sanwo-Olu’s successor should be a Muslim in the interest of justice and equity, ”Ogedengbe said.

Since Ogendengbe made the statement last week, the magazine learnt that Governor Sanwo-Olu and some of his aides have become uneasy as the comment did not go down well with them. “Making such a sensitive political statement at this time does not augur well for all of us, particularly at a period when Asiwaju is trying to galvanise all his supporters across the country for this presidential ambition,” a close confidant of Governor Sanwo Olu told the magazine, noting however that he was not authorized to speak on the issue and that he must remained anonymous.

According to the source, Governor Sanwo-olu “is facing governance for now and has left the issue of his second term to be determined by our leader, Asiwaju and other party chieftains in the state. What is paramount to the hardworking governor is to take the state to the next level based on the brief he received from the Leader after he succeeded Ambode.”

Close sources told the magazine that Tinubu will not speak on the issue until he has successfully settled the matter over his rumored presidential ambition. But those that are close to him say Dr Obafemi Hamzat, the Deputy Governor and Tinubu’s son, Deji are on the card in case the former governor succumbed to pressure from Muslims that one of the should be governor in three years time.

Meanwhile, another source close to Tinubu said the governorship “in Asiwaju’s contemplation is not a family affair, so the suggestion that his son is one of those penciled down for the job is not true. But he will speak on the issue when the time is ripe.”

South West Congress: You Are Only Afraid of Free And Fair Congress, PDP National Organising Secretary Blasts Ogun State PDP Chairman Mr Mr. Sikirulai Ogundele

The Unedited Press Statement.

RE: COMPLAINT OF ILLEGAL RELEASE OF OVER 150 BALLOT PAPER TO GOVERNOR MAKINDE FOR BALLOT STUFFING AT SOUTH-WEST CONGRESS

Our attention has been drawn to a spurious and baseless Petition circulating in the Social media purportedly signed by Mr.

Sikirulai Ogundele, the Ogun State Chairman on behalf of Chairmen of Ogun, Lagos, Osun and Ekiti States.

The petition alleged that over 150 (One hundred and fifty) ballot papers for the election of National Vice Chairman and Zonal Secretary have been released to a group illegally by a Staff of the Directorate of Organization and Mobilization intended for ballot stuffing. The petition also claimed that the hatched job of stuffing the ballot boxes with these illegally released ballot papers is to be supervised and achieved by a ‘certain Senator Anyanwu’.

Ordinarily, there would have been no need to comment on the misleading letter since the allegations are false and malicious, but, in this age of Social media, it is important to save the unsuspecting public from falling prey to the antics of the author, in the name of politics.

It is on record that under our watch, our Party has consistently conducted some of the best primary elections.  The last Presidential Primary election of October 2018 was accorded the status of the most transparent and best primary election of any Political Party in the history of our Country.  Ekiti (2018), Osun (2018), Kogi (2019), Bayelsa (2019), Ondo (2020) Governorship Primary Elections were unquestionably free, fair, transparent and credible.

In keeping with the mandate of the National Working Committee (NWC) to ensure free, fair and transparent South West Zonal Congress:

i. The Electoral materials including all sensitive documents were jointly released to the Congress Committee Chairman and Secretary just yesterday afternoon (11/04/2021).

ii. The voting procedures for Zonal Elections have since changed from the previous method of issuing one ballot per position to each delegate at a time.  Under this NWC, we have reformed our voting process by creating a “Ballot Booklet” where all positions are combined into a booklet and one booklet will be given to each delegate for him/her to vote for all the positions at the same time.  So then, the allegations that Ballot Papers for the National Vice Chairman and Zonal Secretary were issued as suggested in the Petition is not only false but irresponsible.

iii. The total number of Delegates on the approved Delegates list which was released yesterday was743 (Seven Hundred and Forty-three) and the total ballot booklets released to the Congress Committee yesterday afternoon was 750.  So, where did the claim that extra 150 ballots were “illegally” released come from?

iv. The National Directorate of Organization and Mobilization runs an independent computerized system (the author(s)) of the petition under reference are aware because when they came to update their Delegates List, they were put in front of the Directorates’ Database to verify their updated lists.  Every unit runs on its own and therefore, each unit knows what needs to be done at every stage.  The unit that calculates the total number of Delegates is separate from the one that issues the Ballot papers which is also different from the unit that releases.  With this in place, it is quite difficult that as many as 150 extra ballots would have been illegally released, as mischievously alleged.

v. For any member of our Party, especially at the level of a State Chairman to refer to a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as “a certain Senator Anyanwu” is impolite, insulting, reckless and this should be discouraged.  Sen. Anyanwu is a respectable leader of our Party and a very known committed Party member.  These libelous narratives is a grave violation of Section 58(1)(h).

I wish to implore every member of our Party, the Delegates and Stakeholders across the Country to discountenance this unnecessary, irresponsible, reckless and false publication.  The NWC will continue to ensure free, fair, credible and transparent primaries in line with its oath of office.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed confidence that it will win the November 6, Anambra governorship poll, as it remains the hope of the state for good governance.

According to the PDP, it ” presents the hope for the state to rebuild and and realize its full potentials”.

The opposition party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, stated this, on Sunday, in Abuja, while playing host to a coalition of Anambra youths under the aegis of Anambra Youth Initiative For Good Governance.

Ologbondiyan pointed out that the alleged dearth of electoral activities in other parties in the state is an indication, ” that they have already given up ahead of the November election”.

He noted that the assemblage of leading aspirants as well as the surge of the people to the PDP, clearly indicate their resolve to elect the next governor of the state on the platform of the opposition party.
